The southbound carriageway was closed near Doncaster, between junctions 4 and 2, after the crash at 07:05 GMT. A man thought to be aged in his 50s was hit by a vehicle when he stepped out of his car after being involved in an earlier collision just after 07:00 GMT.
The Highways Agency said there were three-mile (5km) tailbacks and the road would be closed into the afternoon. Several other vehicles then collided, South Yorkshire Police said.
A spokesman said: "Drivers are urged to avoid the area and delay journeys if possible as the diversion route is likely to be very busy." The southbound carriageway was closed near Doncaster, between junctions 4 and 2, causing three-mile (5km) tailbacks, the Highways Agency said .
The diversion is taking traffic from junction 4 around Doncaster and on to the A1(M). It is expected to remain closed for several hours as police investigate the crash scene and motorists have been urged to find an alternative route.
