A man has died after a small fishing vessel capsized near the entrance to Cardiff docks.

Two of the men in the dory - a small craft with a hard hull - were rescued nearby, while the third swam to safety after the boat went under.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said none of the three men, aged 37, 50 and 72, were wearing life jackets.

The boat was at anchor and as the tide rose it was pulled under the water, said the agency.

Swansea coastguard was alerted by crane workers at Cardiff docks and two inshore lifeboats from Penarth were sent to the scene.

The RNLI said it launched two lifeboats from Penarth, one at 1108 BST on Thursday, and the other 20 minutes later.

A local fishing boat pulled one man from the water, and a second was taken aboard one of the lifeboats, where the crew gave him resuscitation treatment.

Both the lifeboats then carried out a detailed search for the third man, who was eventually found by the Penarth coastguard.

All three men were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Heath, Cardiff. No details were available on their identities.

Swansea coastguard watch manager Helen Hutson said: "It is vital to be aware of tides, especially when anchored, prevailing weather and tidal conditions must be taken into consideration and this incident highlights the importance of wearing life jackets."
