Los Angeles police say no body found in cabin Charred body found after US manhunt for Christopher Dorner
(35 minutes later)
Police in California have denied reports that a body was found in a burnt-out mountain cabin where a man believed to be an ex-policeman accused of three murders was holed up. Police say they have found charred remains in the rubble of a burnt-down cabin where a murder suspect had been hiding.
Forensic teams are yet to find and identify the body of the suspect in the charred wood. Ex-policeman Christopher Dorner, accused of killing three people, was thought to have barricaded himself in and exchanged fire with police.
But police said they were confident it was Christopher Dorner, the target of their manhunt. A single gunshot was later heard inside the building, which then began to burn.
This comes after a shoot-out in which a local sheriff's deputy was killed. Forensic tests are to be carried out to determine if the remains are those of Mr Dorner.
Another police officer is in hospital with injuries. The officers were wounded during a gunfire exchange with the suspect who had barricaded himself inside the cabin in California's Big Bear region.
Reports say the police then fired tear gas into the building and used a loudspeaker to urge the gunman to surrender.
A single gunshot was later heard inside and the fire started spreading through the cabin.
Difficult search
There were initially reports that a burnt body had been found, but police said the cabin was "still too hot" and forensic teams were yet to search the charred cabin.
However the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said he was confident the man thought to have died inside the burnt-down cabin was former LAPD officer Chrisopher Dorner, the BBC's Alastair Leithead reports from Big Bear.

Forensic teams will find it difficult to go through the charred wood and if a body is found it could take some time before it is identified, our correspondent says.
At an earlier news conference, Cindy Bachman of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that one of the wounded sheriff's deputies had died in an exchange of fire earlier on Tuesday.
"He was pronounced dead in hospital," she said.
Police were alerted after a man matching Mr Dorner's description reportedly broke into a house and tied two people up before making off in a stolen vehicle.
The suspect then abandoned the car and ran into the forest.

LA officials had offered a $1m (£630,000) reward for information leading to his arrest. San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said charred remains had been found inside the burnt-out cabin, where Mr Dorner is believed to have been holed up, the Associated Press reports.
