Scarlett Johansson has confirmed that she auditioned for the role of Fantine in Les Miserables.

The actress said she was hampered by laryngitis when she auditioned for the part in Tom Hooper's critically-acclaimed production.

But having seen the film, Johansson conceded she could not have performed any better than Anne Hathaway, who won a Bafta for her role in the film.

"It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be," she <a href="http://www.broadway.com/buzz/167272/cat-star-scarlett-johansson-on-her-les-miz-film-audition-her-dream-role-and-how-ben-walkers-butt-is-the-ultimate-picker-upper/" >told Broadway.com</a>.

"I auditioned with laryngitis. I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis. I sang my little heart out," she said.

"I think, looking at the film now, there's no possible way I ever could have topped that performance."

Johansson, currently starring in a Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, said the audition for Les Miserables "brought back so many memories" from when she tried out for the role of Cosette as a child.

"It was fun for me to revisit that," she added. "The jazz hands kid inside me was just over the moon!"
