A 10-year-old boy was rescued by RAF helicopter after falling 165ft (50m) down a snow-covered mountain in the Lake District.

The boy, from Preston, was climbing down Swirral Edge ridge on Helvellyn with his father when he slipped, Patterdale Mountain Rescue said.

A medical team was flown to the mountain by air ambulance and the pair were taken to hospital by the RAF.

The boy was conscious with suspected pelvic and head injuries, medics said.

Swirral Edge is one of two edges enclosing the cirque of Red Tarn below the 3,117ft (950m) summit of Helvellyn, England's third highest mountain.
