Partially blocked
Among the worst affected areas was the M74, which was closed southbound at Junction 9 Draffan to Juntion 10 Wellburn by an accident.
Another accident, a few miles north of Abington, was affecting northbound traffic between Junction 13 Abington and Junction 12 Millbank.
Police reported that the main route connecting Scotland and England was down to one lane from about Hamilton to Lesmahgow because of snow.
On the M8, a breakdown was disrupting the flow of traffic eastbound at Hermiston Gait, while traffic was at a near standstill near the Showcase Cinema at Bargeddie.
The westbound carriageway was partially blocked by an accident at Livingston, while there were delays of an hour between the Gorbals and Harthill.
On the M9 between the Bo'ness and Philipstoun junctions, traffic was crawling at speeds of 5mph in both lanes in the direction of Edinburgh.
There were also reports of poor conditions on the A7 south of Edinburgh in the direction of Selkirk and also on the road to Hawick.
Speed restriction
Traffic was stop-start on parts of the A720 Edinburgh city-bypass, while there were reports of poor conditions on many roads in Fife.
A 30mph speed restriction, because of the risk of skidding, on the Forth Road Bridge was causing southbound delays of at least 30 minutes.
At Stirling, the Carron Bridge was partially blocked because of an accident, while an overturned car was disrupting traffic on the B818 Takmadoon Road between Denny and Fintry.
Another overturned car closed a lane on the A90 northbound between the B953 at Inchture and Main Street, Longforgan.
Meanwhile, roadworks were to blame for causing long delays on the Kessock Bridge at Inverness.
