Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man who was seriously assaulted died in hospital.

The 56-year-old victim was injured during a fight in Belfast city centre at the weekend.

The incident took place opposite the Ulster Hall at about 1800 BST on Saturday when the area was busy.

Detectives want to speak to a female Australian tourist who saw the incident and ran to a nearby restaurant to call for help.

A PSNI spokesman said: "The woman was carrying a rucksack and police believe she may have travelled on anywhere in Northern Ireland or into the south of Ireland or across to the UK.

"Anyone who knows of an Australian tourist who was in Belfast on Saturday are urged to contact police.

"One man who was arrested is still in police custody."

The victim died in hospital in Belfast on Wednesday evening.
