Pope Francis is, I'm sure, sincere in his care for the poor and identifying with them in his own simple lifestyle (Buona sera, Pope Francis, 14 March). But the root causes of poverty cannot be tackled until the Roman Catholic church lifts its ban on contraception. It is Catholics in the poorest countries who most closely follow the church's teaching.
