Brits no longer need an above-average salary in order to identify as middle class, according to a study published on Thursday. The Times reports (paywalled link) that more than half of those surveyed identified as middle class – up from 30% in 1966 – and the mean average salary among those was £24,744 a year (the mean average salary in the UK is £26,500). Shopping, reading and going to the cinema came out top as middle-class pursuits and Ford cars were most common, followed by Vauxhalls and Toyotas. The average middle-class holiday break was a short-haul trip to Europe to stay in self-catering package accommodation. | Brits no longer need an above-average salary in order to identify as middle class, according to a study published on Thursday.
