Shards of glass and a needle have been found in bread packs at a bakery, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said.

The watchdog has issued a warning that some loaves of Kingsmill bread may contain "foreign objects".

Police are investigating 11 cases of malicious food tampering at the Orpington bakery in south-east London.

The inquiry was initially sparked after consumers reported finding glass fragments and sewing needles in Kingsmill bread last year.

Package warning

The latest reports relate to objects found inside the Kingsmill packaging rather than in the bread itself.

Up to 2.5 million loaves are produced every week at the Allied Bakeries bakery.

"The agency has been working closely with the police, who are leading the investigation, and Allied Bakeries to resolve this issue and will be pressing the company to take further measures as appropriate," the FSA said in a statement.

Allied Bakeries is advising customers who find foreign objects in its bread to call its customer care line.
