The wartime device was found at about 11:50 BST by workers resurfacing the car park in Cavendish Road, Matlock. | |
Officers from Derbyshire Police set up a cordon around the area where the device - thought to be from World War II - was found. | |
Neighbouring properties were also evacuated and a controlled explosion was carried out at about 15:00 BST. | |
Insp Richard Booth said: "The big issue for us is public safety and as a matter of precaution we put a cordon on and evacuated about a dozen houses nearby. | |
"We don't take any chances with anything like this and put everything in place to make sure that, if something is awry, nobody is going to get harmed." |
