An Islamist militant leader who has a $5 million American bounty on his head was wounded but escaped during an army offensive that killed eight rebels in the southern Philippines, a military official said Tuesday. The militant, Isnilon Hapilon, a leader of Abu Sayyaf, a group linked to Al Qaeda, was dragged to safety by his followers before soldiers could seize control of the rebels’ jungle base on Monday, Col. Carlito Galvez said. Mr. Hapilon, 47, is the only one of five Abu Sayyaf leaders still alive. All were indicted in the United States over the kidnapping of Americans in 2001.
