The manager of a nursery in Somerset where a third of the children enrolled are from multiple births is insisting it is "not just exclusively for twins".

Acorns Nursery, in Minehead, which opened in September, has 30 children in attendance including 10 twins.

Ranging in age from eight months to four years, only two of the five sets of twins are identical.

Nursery manager Julie Lyndley said: "Usually you get one or two sets of twins but five is quite remarkable."

'Very close'

Despite the high numbers of children from multiple births, Ms Lyndley said they were not using name badges or splitting the twins up.

"Some of our twins like to work together and some of them like to be quite independent of each other," she said.

"But all the sets of twins, both younger and older, seem to have an understanding between them so if one starts to cry the other cries as well.

"They are all very close."

Ms Lyndley said although they have so many twins at the nursery they are not "exclusively for twins" and "welcome other children".

In 2011, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that 11,330 women in England and Wales gave birth to twins, 172 to triplets and three had quads or more.

This has become more common since 2001 with more than 16 in every 1,000 deliveries now involving multiple births.
