A fire at a house in Birmingham in which a woman in her 50s died is being treated as murder, police have said.

Forensic investigations confirmed the fire at Cateswell Road, Springfield, on Wednesday was started deliberately, West Midlands Police said.

A 16-year-old girl remains in hospital, in a critical condition with 70% burns, along with three women and a man who were also injured.

The woman who died is yet to be formally identified.

Police said they were awaiting results of a post-mortem examination.

Det Ch Insp Sab Johal said: "Given the devastation at the scene our investigation is likely to be extremely protracted.

"Our primary concern is the welfare of those who remain in hospital and while they continue to receive treatment we are yet to obtain their accounts of what happened.

"With this in mind, we have officers at their bedside ready to take full statements."
