Seattle apartment shootings leave five dead Seattle apartment shootings leave five dead
(about 5 hours later)
Five people have been killed in shootings at an apartment complex south of the US city of Seattle, police say. A man killed his girlfriend and three others before police shot him at an apartment complex south of the US city of Seattle, police say.
A man and a woman were found dead in separate apartments during a search of the building in Federal Way. The 27-year-old gunman, who has not been identified, killed three men who either witnessed the initial killing or tried to intervene.
One man lying injured in a car park died from gunfire after producing a weapon when police approached him, though it is not clear whether he was killed by a police bullet. Responding police in the town of Federal Way shot the gunman when he refused to drop his shotgun.
Two other men were found dead in the complex grounds. He fled and police shot him again minutes later when he drew a handgun.
"When we arrived, there was a lot of gunfire already being fired and multiple calls, 911 calls of gunfire," Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said. "We believe this is a domestic violence homicide," Federal Way Police Chief Brian Wilson said at a news conference on Monday.
It is not clear how the shooting incident at the complex began, but local television quotes police as saying it was a firefight between the four men who died. He said after killing his girlfriend in the flat they shared, the gunman confronted a 24 and 26-year-old man and shot them both dead.
"We're going to continue to go door to door in hopes that we can find some additional witnesses, and hopefully we won't be finding any more victims," Ms Schrock told AP. Among the dead was a 62-year-old man who left his apartment to investigate the commotion, then retreated back side.
She said it was possible that the woman killed in the gun fight had been hit by a stray bullet. He was shot and killed when the gunman broke down his door, Chief Wilson said.
Police carried out extensive searches but said they did not think there were any more gunmen at large in the district. The gunman had a valid concealed weapons permit and no criminal history, he said.
