Newspaper claims that a man breached security at Windsor Castle are being investigated by the police.

The Daily Express said a member of the public walked into the castle through an unlocked gate and took a telephone book with details of key royal aides.

A Royal Family spokeswoman denied any secure areas had been breached and said no royals were resident in the castle at the time.

Scotland Yard said detectives were investigating the "full circumstances".

'Not ideal'

Buckingham Palace said the man had only ever been able to get into areas which would have been open to paying visitors.

"While we accept that this is not ideal that somebody can evade paying for a ticket there was no major security breach," the royals' spokeswoman said.

"We have taken the issue very seriously and investigated fully. It won't happen again."

An Express photographer retraced the man's footsteps and found a way into the castle, the newspaper reported.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said any such incident was taken very seriously.

"We are still investigating the full circumstances of how the photographer was able to gain access, and the claims made by a member of the public."

Last year, the Sun newspaper said one of its reporters and a photographer drove a hire van with a fake bomb into the castle's grounds.
