Version 0 of 1.

A 19-year-old bagpiper was killed by a stranger who stabbed him several times in the back, a jury has been told.

Craig Hepburn was visiting family in Marsden, West Yorkshire, when he was attacked along with his friend Connor Paton, 18, Leeds Crown Court heard.

The Scotsmen were stabbed as they walked home after Mr Hepburn had been playing bagpipes in a local pub.

Anthony Driver, of Grange Cottages, Marsden, and Luke Elliott, of Main Avenue, Cowlersley, deny murder.

Mr Driver and Mr Elliot also deny charges of attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent and perverting the course of justice.

'Protecting his head'

Mr Hepburn had only arrived in Marsden a few hours earlier from his home in Linwood, Renfrewshire, when he and Mr Paton were attacked on 6 July last year.

Peter Moulson QC, prosecuting, said Mr Hepburn suffered 11 stab wounds, mainly to his back.

The jury was told Mr Paton had tried to help his friend but was stabbed three times himself.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Paton described to police how "Craig was on the floor curled up, trying to protect himself. His legs were curled up to his chest and his arms were protecting his head".

Mr Moulson said Mr Paton also said the incident happened after two men with their hoods up came over and accused the pair of "looking at them".

The trial was adjourned until Tuesday.
