Small Heath mosque death: Police make fresh appeal

Police have made a fresh appeal for information after a man was stabbed to death in Birmingham last week.

Mohammed Saleem, 75, was stabbed three times in the back in Green Lane, Small Heath, on 29 April.

The grandfather of 22, was attacked as he walked home from the Green Lane Mosque at about 22:30 BST.

West Midlands Police said they were still trying to identify a man captured on CCTV running along Wyndcliffe Road, near where Mr Saleem was killed.

They described him as a white male, aged between 25 and 32.

Det Supt Mark Payne, from force CID, said: "Someone out there must know who he is and we urgently want to speak to him."

He said Small Heath was a tight-knit community and police were following up several leads after calls from the public.

"There has been real support from local residents and members of the congregation of Green Lane Mosque, and we appreciate the help they have given our investigation so far," Det Supt Payne said.

"I want to reiterate how important it is to come forward with any information you may have."

Police said the motive for the attack remained unclear and they were continuing to investigate several lines of inquiry.

Detectives said there was no evidence Mr Saleem had been the victim of a robbery or a racist attack.

Last week, his family said they believed it had been "premeditated".
