Former Cleveland Police officer charged with rape

A former Cleveland Police officer has been charged with nine counts of rape, the force has confirmed.

The 37-year-old man is also accused of "a number of other sexual offences", said a police spokeswoman.

The name of the officer has not been released for legal reasons, Cleveland Police said.

He has been remanded in custody after a previous court hearing and is due to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court on 13 May.
