Israeli Police Question Muslim Cleric After Scuffle
Version 0 of 1. JERUSALEM — The Israeli police on Wednesday detained the Palestinians’ top Muslim cleric for questioning about disturbances a day earlier at a fiercely contested holy site in Jerusalem known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. Sheik Mohammad Hussein, the grand mufti of Jerusalem, was released without charges after being questioned for about six hours on suspicion of incitement to violence, according to Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman. He said that on Tuesday, Arab worshipers threw chairs at Israelis visiting the holy site, which is in an area captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war and which the Palestinians demand as part of a future state. Palestinian leaders issued statements strongly condemning the sheik’s detention. |
