Sheffield air rifle shooting victim dies

A man who was shot in the head with an air rifle has died in hospital, police said.

Chris Humphreys, 24, from Handsworth in Sheffield was wounded at a property in Handsworth Grange Road on 5 May.

South Yorkshire Police said he died at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital on Saturday.

Mr Humphreys' family described him as a "fantastic son and brother" and praised hospital staff for their efforts.

In a statement they said: "Today our Chris lost his brave fight for life, he was a fantastic son and brother to all his family, he tried to hang on and recover but could not.

"The doctors and nurses at the neuro critical care ward at the Hallamshire were fantastic and gave him as much as they could.

"As a family, we would like to thank them all for the help and support they gave to our Chris."

Russell Fairchild, 47, of Handsworth Grange Road, has been charged with wounding in relation to the shooting and is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 14 May.

A 23-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident was released without charge.
