Egypt: Reports of Embassy Plots
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/16/world/middleeast/egypt-reports-of-embassy-plots.html Version 0 of 1. Three Egyptian men arrested last week and accused of plotting terrorist acts in Egypt sought to carry out suicide attacks against the United States and French Embassies, the state news media said Wednesday. One of the men had been deported from Iran and another from Algeria for engaging in militant activities. All three were imprisoned in Egypt in 2009, but broke out during the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The men, who the government says have ties to Al Qaeda, said they planned to attack the French Embassy in revenge for France’s military intervention against militants in Mali, the state news media said. After their arrests were announced Saturday, a Western official identified the United States Embassy as one of their targets. |
