Version 0 of 1.

At least 31 people were killed Wednesday when gunmen attacked an army base in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the military said, underlining the challenge facing a new United Nations intervention force in the territory. The attackers fought a two-hour battle with soldiers at the army recruitment center near the town of Beni in North Kivu Province, Col. Olivier Hamuli said. He said the provisional death toll was 23 of the attackers, believed to be members of one of many militant groups in the region, 5 recruits and 3 soldiers. The military eventually repelled the attack and was interrogating captured rebels to find out where they came from and why they carried out the assault, he said.
