One of the suspects, Michael Adebowale, 22, of Greenwich, appeared before Westminster magistrates on Thursday. He spoke only to confirm his name and address. Drummer Rigby's family said the death had had a "devastating effect" on them but said the "generosity, kindness and sympathy expressed by everyone we have come into contact with has been truly staggering and is giving us the strength to carry on."
In a statement from the dead soldier's family added: "We would like to emphasise that Lee would not want people to use his name as an to carry out attacks against others.
"We would not wish any other families to go through this harrowing experience and appeal to everyone to keep calm and show their respect in a peaceful manner."
An inter-faith organisation aimed at tackling extremism says the number of attacks on Muslims following the killing of Drummer Rigby rose sharply.
Faith Matters said it had recorded 212 incidents since last Wednesday, up from four to six per day.
Police have asked that the BNP alter the route of a planned march from Woolwich.
A Facebook page entitled The Fusiliers Association North East carries a warning to veterans of the risk to the Army's reputation "if they are perceived to be supporting the EDL's (English Defence League's) inflammatory agenda".
Serving soldiers are reminded not to participate in marches or demonstrations, according to the page.
