The petition, addressed to the defence secretary, Philip Hammond, requests that the women be awarded the George Medal, a decoration for civilians who perform particular deeds of heroism.
Organised by the Rev Jesse van der Valk, rector of the two Anglican churches in Woolwich, the petition says the medal should be given to Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, who spoke at length to one of the alleged attackers before the police arrived, as well as Amanda Donnelly and her daughter, Gemini Donnelly-Martin, who also talked to the alleged attackers and comforted Rigby as he lay, fatally injured.
The petition to Hammond says: "The fact that no other bystander was hurt in the incident is testament to the courageous actions of these women. As the people of Woolwich come to terms with what happened here – coming together to honour the heroines of that day will send a positive message of unity and peace." | The petition to Hammond says: "The fact that no other bystander was hurt in the incident is testament to the courageous actions of these women.
