Three wounded in Santa Monica campus shooting Six dead in Santa Monica shooting rampage
(about 2 hours later)
Three people have been injured after a gunman opened fire near a college in Santa Monica, California, police say. At least six people are dead after a series of shootings around a college in Santa Monica, California, say police.
A suspect was found by police in the college library and taken into custody, US media report. The rampage began at a house and ended on campus where police say they shot the gunman in the college library.
Police are investigating if the attack is linked to the discovery of two dead people in a nearby burned home and a woman wounded in a car outside. Police say the attacker killed two people in the home, two more as he headed to the nearby Santa Monica College and another two on campus.
The college is streets away from a fundraising event that was attended by President Barack Obama. The unidentified gunman was clad in black and armed with an assault-style rifle, according to the authorities.
Police Sgt Rudy Flores said witnesses reported a man shooting at cars and a bus from a street corner. The college remains on lockdown. The violence broke out before noon, when a man in black opened fire on a house, which caught fire, and then a car, wounding the driver, police said. The suspect fled the scene in a car.
Two of the wounded were listed in a critical condition and one was in serious condition, a hospital spokesman said. Authorities say the violence then moved to a street corner near the college, where the suspect fired at passing vehicles before moving into the college campus.
There was major fire damage to a nearby home where two dead people were found on Friday, said Jeff Furrows of the Santa Monica Fire Department. A woman also was found with a gunshot wound in a car outside the home, he said. The college is streets away from a fundraising event that was attended by President Barack Obama on Friday.
