Afghanistan explosion 'targets Supreme Court' in Kabul Afghanistan explosion 'targets Supreme Court' in Kabul
(about 1 hour later)
Three people have been killed in a powerful explosion in the Afghan capital, Kabul, say police. A suicide bomb attack in Kabul has killed at least 16 people and injured more than 40 others outside the Supreme Court, Afghan police say.
A police source said the bomb had been a suicide attack on the Supreme Court and that at least seven other people were injured. The attacker drove a car packed with explosives at buses which were transporting court staff, including judges, police told the BBC.
The court building is about 200m (yards) from the entrance to the American embassy. The explosion happened during Kabul's evening rush hour.
The explosion happened as employees at the court were leaving work for the day. The court building is a few hundred metres from the fortified entrance to the US Embassy and Nato's HQ.
Witnesses said they saw the wreckage of a car and buses with windows smashed. A BBC producer in Kabul says it is the deadliest attack in the city since the end of 2011.
It is also the second in the past two days. On Monday, seven Taliban insurgents, including suicide bombers, targeted the capital's airport.
