Version 0 of 1.

A mother tried to kill her newborn daughter by dropping her five floors down a tower block rubbish chute, a court has heard.

The baby girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found with serious head injuries outside a block of flats in Wolverhampton in September.

Jaymin Abdulrahman, 25, is accused of wrapping the baby in material and dropping her 40ft (12m) down the chute.

She pleaded not guilty to attempted murder at Birmingham Crown Court.

Ms Abdulrahman, also denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The court heard she initially told police the baby had been kidnapped by strangers.

'Deliberate act'

The prosecution said it anticipated she would admit to putting the baby in the chute during the trial and it submitted "that her intention was to kill".

The baby was treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital for severe head and brain injuries, including a skull fracture.

Prosecutor Andrew Smith QC told the jury he did not believe Ms Abdulrahman was suffering from mental illness which would have "removed her reason or capacity to understand her actions".

"Miss Abdulrahman knew what she was doing when she carried the baby from the flat and dropped her those five floors down the chute," he said.

"The reason why she decided to place her daughter in the rubbish chute may be never be known or understood.

"However, the prosecution say that her intention can be clearly identified from her actions on that September afternoon last year."

The trial continues.
