Police hunting the killer of a teenager who was stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend have arrested a man.

Paul McMillan was attacked near his home in Dagenham, east London, at about 2200 BST on Wednesday, police said.

The 19-year-old was taken to hospital but died from his injuries. A post-mortem examination revealed he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Detectives said he had gone out to make sure his girlfriend - who has not been named - got home safely.

Murder investigation

Detective Chief Inspector Damian Allain, who is leading the murder investigation, appealed for information concerning the attack in Valence Avenue.

Officers released details of two men they wanted to question in connection with the incident.

The first was described as white, aged in his late teens or early 20s, 6ft, with short dark hair. The second was of similar age, 5ft 10in, with short blond hair.

The first man wore a navy blue tracksuit top, possibly with a hood, and Nike logo on the side.

The second wore a dark grey tracksuit with noticeable diagonal stripes on the bottoms from the knee down.
