A Gloucestershire primary school has banned children from wearing frilly socks after a pupil fell over.

Kingsholm Primary School in Gloucester said the incident led to staff reviewing the health and safety and uniform policies.

Head teacher Jan Buckland said, following a risk assessment, ankle socks should have a frill of "no more than 3cm (1.2in)".

"As a school, the safety of our children is paramount," she added.

The socks - which have long, lacy frills - had proven popular with children at the school after one parent made a pair for her daughter to wear.

But following the incident, the school has taken the decision to ban pupils from wearing them, and the school's uniform policy has been "changed accordingly".
