The other parties contesting the by-election were Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems, Scottish Greens, UKIP, National Front, Scottish Democratic Alliance and Scottish Christian Party. The turnout was 38.8%, with Labour's Willie Young in second. Christine Jardine (Lib Dems) was third and Conservative Ross Thomson was fourth.
The turnout was 38.8%, with the result just after 01:50 on Friday. Mr McDonald said: "I will work hard to earn trust, as Brian Adam did. I cannot help thinking of Brian Adam at this time."
The polls were open from 07:00 until 22:00 on Thursday. He said his top priority was to fight the closure of schools.
The other candidates were Willie Young (Labour), Ross Thomson (Conservative), Christine Jardine (Lib Dems), Rhonda Reekie (Scottish Greens), Otto Inglis (UKIP), Dave MacDonald (National Front), James Trolland (Scottish Democratic Alliance) and Tom Morrow (Scottish Christian Party "Proclaiming Christ's Lordship"). Mr McDonald - who secured 9,814 of the 23,396 votes - thanked his family and the people of Donside after the result.
The result came just after 01:50 on Friday.
