A helicopter carrying senior officers of Nicaragua’s air force, including its second highest-ranking member, Col. Manuel Antonio López García, crashed Thursday, and all 10 people on board are presumed dead, military officials said Friday. Officials said a team had recovered the body of one of the passengers, Col. Mario Alberto Jirón López, who was in charge of a repair base, as well as other human remains and pieces of the MI-17 military helicopter. After attending a training mission near Lake Managua, in the northwestern region, the group was on its way to Managua, the capital, when the crew reported the need to make an emergency landing. A special commission has been formed to investigate the cause of the crash.
