Shotton Colliery crash: Two women dead another critically hurt Shotton Colliery crash: Man arrested after two women die
(about 11 hours later)
Two women have died and three others injured in a three-vehicle crash in County Durham. A man has been arrested in connection with the deaths of two women drivers in a three-car crash in County Durham.
The dead women, who have not been named, were in separate cars travelling in opposite directions on Front Street, Shotton Colliery, near Peterlee. Rebecca Learoyd, 18, from Shinwell Crescent, Thornley, and Anne Peachey, 60, of Kell Crescent, Sherburn Hill, died in the crash on Sunday.
Three women passengers from both cars are being treated in hospital - one of them is described as being in an "extremely critical" condition. The women were in separate cars travelling along Front Street in Shotton Colliery, Peterlee.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash at about 18:00 BST on Sunday. The 22-year-old driver of a third vehicle was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The male driver of the third car was uninjured. Police said Miss Learoyd was driving a Fiat 500 and Mrs Peachey was at the wheel of a Citroen Xsara.
A 19-year-old woman passenger in the Fiat, from Thornley, suffered serious injuries and is in a critical condition in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
Two passengers in the Citroen, Mrs Peachey's 33-year-old daughter Joanne and her 13-year-old granddaughter, Adele Harland, suffered non-serious injuries.
The arrested man, from Wingate, who was uninjured, was later bailed pending further inquiries.
Sgt Phil Grieve, of Durham Police, said: "It is vital we establish where all three vehicles had been travelling from and the manner in which they were being driven.
"If anyone else saw them on the roads in that area in the minutes leading up the accident I would ask them to contact us as soon as possible."
