Southbourne flat fire rescue: Man arrested | |

A man has been arrested after allegedly refusing to leave a burning flat and attempting to attack police with knives as they tried to rescue him. | |
Officers used a Taser stun gun on the man before saving him from the fire in Southbourne, Dorset, on Saturday evening. | |
The man was later treated in hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation. | |
A man is now being held in custody on suspicion of arson and attempting to assault police and fire officers. | |
Firefighters from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were threatened when they arrived at the flat on Oxford Avenue, said police. | |
A man had barricaded himself inside the property and was refusing to leave. | |
'Baton round' | |
Police evacuated other residents from the building. | |
Armed officers forced entry to the flat after negotiations with the man failed. | |
A Dorset Police spokesman said: "Upon entering the flat they were attacked by a white male in his 40s armed with two large knives. | |
"Officers responded by deploying Taser and a baton round which enabled them to subdue the male and safely remove him from the burning building allowing Dorset Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the fire." |
