A senior Greater Manchester Police officer has been jailed after he was found guilty of insurance and mortgage fraud.

Insp Mohammed Razaq, of Bradford Road, Bolton, made false insurance claims on his four houses, profiting by £13,000.

He was found guilty of nine fraud and money laundering offences at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Razaq, who led the Bolton West neighbourhood team, made three false claims against his properties in Great Lever, Daubhill and Salford between 2008 and 2011, police said.

He also attempted to secure more favourable terms on property insurance, fraudulently obtained a £12,000 loan against one of his houses and obtained a personal mortgage for a house he bought to let.

He has been suspended from the force for the past two years, while the case was being investigated.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said a misconduct inquiry will be held and the case referred to the Home Secretary to decide if he should have part of his pension withheld.

Ass Ch Const Dawn Copley said: "There is no doubt that the actions of Inspector Razaq have brought discredit to GMP.

"GMP expects the very highest standards of all its officers and staff. They should be honest and act with integrity and should not compromise or abuse their position."
