South Wales Police said the bodies were believed to be of a woman and a child. The woman has been named locally as Joanne Thomas.
Her next of kin have been informed and family liaison officers are providing support, police said.
House-to-house inquiries in the area by detectives are continuing.

Police said officers were continuing house-to-house inquiries in the area. Coun Harvey Jones, who represents the Plymouth ward on Merthyr Tydfil council which includes Troedyrhiw, said he was shocked to hear news of the deaths.
