Birmingham Crown Court heard Ian Woolley, 44, killed Pauline Gillen as she lay in bed at her flat in Acacia Avenue, on Walsall's Yew Tree Estate. He then stabbed Jason Duffield when he went to investigate the noise and Woolley threw his body over a balcony. Woolley, of Holly Court, admitted the manslaughters on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He was sentenced to be detained in a secure mental health centre indefinitely. West Midlands Police said the pair were stabbed in the early hours of 6 October. 'Tragic case' They said after the attacks Woolley called 999 and told an operator he had just committed murder before hanging up. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the body of 41-year-old Mr Duffield at the back of the flats and the body of 69-year-old Mrs Gillen in the bedroom of her flat. Det Con Andrew Fleming said it had been a "tragic case". Mr Duffield's wife Sarah, from who he was separated, said he had been a "caring and wonderful person who would help anyone in need". She added: "Because of this he died so tragically and in such a brutal way." In a statement Mrs Gillen's family said she would be remembered as "the caring and loving person that we all loved dearly". |
