The Leicester City captain Wes Morgan has been found guilty of careless driving after falling asleep at the wheel of his car.

Morgan, 29, was going home to Gedling, Nottinghamshire, when he crashed his BMW into a barrier on the A46 following an awards function in Leicester.

The trial heard the ex-Nottingham Forest star had not slept for 22 hours and had drunk four brandies.

He was fined £2,000 at Nottingham Magistrates Court.

Morgan was also given five penalty points. He already had six on his licence.

The footballer said he briefly nodded off and swerved his car into the roadside barrier, but no other vehicles were involved.

Morgan admitted he drank four brandies and cola during the evening, and officers reported a slight smell of alcohol on his breath.

However, the District Judge ruled that Mr Morgan had no case to answer for a charge of driving while unfit through drink.
