Families boycott bomb memorial Row over Omagh memorial wording
(about 1 hour later)
Relatives of people killed in the Omagh bomb have boycotted the unveiling of a design for a new permanent memorial. Any new memorial to the Omagh bomb must represent what really happened in the atrocity, relatives of those killed in the 1998 attack have said.
Spokesman Michael Gallagher said they "thought it was important that there was a plaque to represent what really happened". Spokesman Michael Gallagher said they were happy with the statue, but were still in dispute with Omagh District Council over wording for a plaque.
Mr Gallagher, who lost his son Aidan in the atrocity, claims that without this it is "a dishonest piece of art". The council said it has appointed an independent mediator in an attempt to reach an agreement with the families.
A total of 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, died when a Real IRA bomb exploded on 15 August 1998. Plans for the memorial were unveiled by the council on Tuesday.
