Israel has begun the process of freeing a group of 26 Palestinian prisoners, whose release was agreed as part of the deal to restart peace talks. Israel has released 26 Palestinian prisoners as part of a deal that will see peace talks resume this week.
The prisoners, most of whom carried out attacks more than 20 years ago, were driven out of a jail in white minibuses with tinted windows. Buses carrying the inmates drove them from a prison in central Israel to the Beitunia crossing in the West Bank and the Erez crossing with the Gaza Strip.
About half are being taken to Gaza, and half to the West Bank. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas greeted the 11 sent to the West Bank, while crowds met the other 15 in Gaza.
Palestinian and Israeli negotiators began direct talks two weeks ago for the first time in three years. Israeli and Palestinian representatives will begin direct talks in Jerusalem on Wednesday after a three-year hiatus.
