The boxer, who has received treatment for depression and alcoholism, had been training in southern Spain ahead of a title defence in December. However, his manager, Barry Hughes, said he expected Scott Harrison to be released from jail soon.
A Foreign Office spokesman said he had refused consular assistance. He said the boxer's car broke down and there was a confrontation with Spanish police because of a language problem.
Harrison's UK lawyer Massimo Franchi said he had no knowledge of the arrest. Scott Harrison, who has received treatment for depression and alcoholism, had been training in southern Spain.
Last month Harrison announced he would stay out of Scotland while preparing for the fight against former European champion Nicky Cook.

Fight doubts
Last month he announced he would stay out of Scotland while preparing for the fight against former European champion Nicky Cook.
The bout has now been thrown into doubt after the fighter's arrest in Malaga.
However, Barry Hughes insisted the comeback fight would go ahead.
"There was no interpreter in place for Scott at the police station and no interpreter at the court," he said.
"We feel he is being unlawfully held."
He added that Scott Harrison denied assaulting anyone and nowhere on the charge sheet did it say the boxer stole a vehicle.
