Teenager found guilty of Scarborough seafront murder Teen jailed for life over Scarborough seafront murder
(about 1 hour later)
A 17-year-old boy has been found guilty of stabbing a teenager to death outside a amusement arcade in Scarborough. A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a teenager on Scarborough seafront.
Michael Vincent Graham, 19, died after he was attacked by Macauley Jenkinson on Foreshore Road, in April. Michael 'Angel' Graham, 19, was stabbed in the back 12 times by former friend Macauly Jenkinson outside an amusement arcade.
A jury at Teesside Crown Court found Jenkinson guilty after more than nine hours of deliberations. A jury at Teesside Crown Court found him guilty by a majority of 11 to 1.
He was also found guilty of a charge of wounding with intent in relation to an attack on a 17-year-old boy. He will be sentenced later. Jenkinson, who was just 16 at the time of the attack in April, was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum sentence of 16 years.
Speaking shortly after the killing, Mr Graham's family said: "We are absolutely devastated by what has happened to Mickey and we're struggling to come to terms with the fact that he has gone." Mr Graham was stabbed repeatedly with a flick knife during a fight near the Olympia arcade at around 23:30 BST on 13 April.
His killer later boasted of the attack in a text to his girlfriend.
'Defenceless victim'
He can now be named after reporting restrictions were lifted by Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, because of public interest in the case.
The jury was told the boys had been friends but fell out when Mr Graham taunted Jenkinson over his relationship with a 14-year-old girl when he was 15.
The court heard name-calling and abuse texts followed, in what the judge described as "adolescent posturing".
After the guilty verdicts, Tom Roberts QC, prosecuting, said the offences were aggravated by the ferocity of the attack, from behind on the defenceless victim.
Jenkinson had assembled a group of youngsters and had encouraged them to arm themselves and support him, the barrister said.
It happened in front of a group of youths, some as young as 14.
The seriousness of the case was also aggravated by it taking place in public, on the seafront, he said.
'Cowardly attack'
Jenkinson, of Main Street, Seamer, Scarborough, was also found guilty of wounding with intent a 17-year-old boy, who can not be named, who went to Mr Graham's aid.
He was given a four-year concurrent prison sentence for the attack.
Mr Graham's family said their lives had been "shattered" by his death.
"Not only have we lost a son, grandson, brother, nephew and a dad, we have also lost a friend who loved his family and was always there for us when we needed him, no matter what," they said.
"He was a good friend to many and we would especially like to thank one of his best friends who was with him at the end.
"We hope that Mickey can now rest in peace and we are allowed to get on with our own lives and continue to grieve in private."
Det Ch Insp Maria Taylor said: "Stabbing him in the back gave Michael no chance of defending himself and Jenkinson has to live with the fact that his cowardly attack has robbed a family of one of their loved ones."
