(about 1 hour later)
Former prime minister Julia Gillard has made a rare statement on the night of the Australian election to congratulate the Labor successor in her seat. Julia Gillard has paid tribute to Kevin Rudd the man who ousted her as prime minister for a "spirited fight" in the Australian election.
Gillard did not contest the election after losing the Labor leadership to Kevin Rudd in June and the new candidate, Joanne Ryan, has won the seat of Lalor. The former Labor leader tweeted that this was "a tough night for Labor" shortly after Rudd conceded the election to opposition leader Tony Abbott.
A tough night for Labor. But a spirited fight by Kevin, Albo, George + the whole team. My thoughts are with you all. JG
