Emergency services said it was being treated as a "major incident". The fire service said 55 people had been checked over at the retail park and one person was taken to hospital.
Police said the alarm was raised after people at the check-out tills in Sainsbury's began coughing and complained of feeling unwell. A spokesman said the gas was "non toxic" and they were "quite happy that there's no risk to the public".
He said the shops were now being handed back to the owners.
