An official of India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said more than 20 families were living in the building. "Approximately 80 to 90 people are believed to be left behind in the building and trapped,'' Alok Awasthi of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) told the AFP news agency.
"We think up to 70 people are trapped," Alok Avasthy of NDMA said. Officials said 22 families lived in the building and the municipality had asked the residents to leave it earlier this year.
In June, at least five people were killed in a building collapse in Mumbai. "The building was around 30 years old. We had issued a notice to them in April to vacate the building, but they did not act," municipality spokesman Vijay Khabale Patil said. He did not explain why the families had been asked to leave.
And in April, 74 people were killed in another building collapse on the outskirts of the city. Property prices and rent in Mumbai are among the highest in Asia. Many citizens are forced to live in old, dilapidated properties in a land-scarce city.
Over 100 people have been killed in five building collapses in Mumbai between April and June alone.
And between 2008 and 2012, there were 100 building collapses in the city in which 53 people died and 103 others were injured, authorities say.
