ROME — Amanda Knox, the American student who was convicted and later acquitted of killing her British roommate, went on trial again in Italy on Monday, but neither she, nor her former Italian boyfriend and co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito, were in court.

In March, Italy’s highest court overturned their acquittals in the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, 21, and ordered a new trial, which is being held in a Florentine court.

Defense lawyers on Monday asked for a review of some evidence and for new testimony. The judge denied many of the requests but agreed to run further tests on the presumed murder weapon and to take the testimony of a jailed mobster who has accused his brother of committing the crime.
