Part of the M4 westbound at Newport has reopened after a serious crash between and a car and lorry late on Wednesday night. A woman has died after a crash between a car and a lorry which closed a section of the M4 overnight near Newport.
The motorway was shut between junction 24 at Coldra and junction 26, bringing early morning traffic problems. The 77-year-old was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in the city after the incident at junction 25 (Caerleon) at 23:10 BST on Wednesday.
Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free one casualty after being called to the scene at 23:11 BST on Wednesday. The M4 was shut westbound between junction 24 at Coldra and junction 26 until 08:00 BST on Thursday.
Diversions were in place before the road reopened at 08:00 BST. A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The diversion took drivers from Coldra around the A48 Southern Distributor Road around the city. Traffic was diverted via the A48 southern distributor road until accident investigation work was completed.
Queues of traffic were reported by 07:15 BST.
