The triple jumper Phillips Idowu has admitted drinking and driving after being stopped by police in Essex. The athlete Phillips Idowu has been banned from driving after he was caught behind the wheel of his car at more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
At Chelmsford Magistrates Court, Idowu, 34, admitted driving while drunk in Epping on 20 September. The 34-year-old triple jumper, who won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics, was stopped by Essex Police in his Land Rover in Epping on 20 September.
Idowu, who was behind the wheel of a Land Rover when the offence happened, was fined £145 and ordered to carry out 50 hours of community service. Idowu, who admitted drinking and driving, was banned for two years by Chelmsford magistrates.
Idowu, from Epping, who won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was banned from driving for two years. He was also fined £145 and ordered to do 50 hours of community service.
Magistrates told Idowu, who is from Epping, that he could reduce his two-year driving ban by six months if he went on a rehabilitation course.
The court heard he failed a breath test, with a recording of 96 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres.
Idowu has no previous convictions, magistrates heard.
