China is planning to build its largest coal gasification energy project in the western region of Xinjiang, according to a report by Xinhua, the state news agency. The $30 billion project is in the Zhundong area of the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, and it is expected to produce 30 billion cubic meters of gas per year, Xinhua reported Sunday, citing Xinjiang officials. The project will need an input of 90 million tons of coal per year and is expected to create 18,000 jobs, Xinhua reported. The article said “coal gasification is expected to be a key sector in the country’s clean energy initiative.” The coal gasification process can result in severe discharge of pollutants if it is not properly controlled. |
