Cinema-goers in London pay up to three times more for movie tickets than film-buffs in other European capital cities, new research has revealed.

The survey, carried out by London Assembly's Liberal Democrats, found an adult ticket at Leicester Square can cost £12.45 more than in Europe.

The figures were published on the eve of the 50th London Film Festival.

More than 180 feature and 130 short films from 48 countries will be showing during the 16-day festival.

Dee Doocey, London assembly's Liberal Democrat Culture spokesperson said cinema is "becoming a luxury few can afford".

She added: "London topping the European price charts is just another case of 'rip-off' Britain.

"Only here do you need to be earning almost as much as a Hollywood star to afford to see the latest flicks."
